The Pillanmapu Geopark is a territorial initiative that seeks to recognize, protect, and promote the extraordinary natural and cultural wealth of the San Clemente commune. With over 4,500 km\u00b2 of mountain ranges, volcanoes, high-altitude lakes, native forests, relict glaciers, and a millennia-old human heritage, this territory represents one of the most unique landscapes in central Chile.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

HOW PILLANMAPU WAS BORN<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Over the past decade, the Maule mountain range has experienced an explosive increase in the number of visitors. This growth has outpaced our capacity to support it with the necessary management, infrastructure, and education, which has begun to jeopardize both ecosystems and geosites, as well as the livelihoods of those who depend on and travel through the region.\u00a0<\/p>

With that diagnosis, in 2019 a group of people decided to promote the creation of a territorial management model capable of addressing these challenges in a comprehensive way. After analyzing different alternatives, they concluded that the figure of a UNESCO Global Geopark<\/em> It was the \u201ctailor-made suit\u201d: a model that combines conservation, education, community participation and sustainable development.<\/p>

Over time, the project incorporated new perspectives and disciplines: biology, archaeology, governance, architecture, administration, and education, among others. Today, Pillanmapu is a collective effort<\/strong>, promoted by the Maule Regional Government, the Municipality of San Clemente and the Pillanmapu Geopark Foundation.<\/p>

We performed the the most comprehensive multidisciplinary diagnosis that exists on the Maule mountain range<\/strong>, a study that integrated the inventory of geological, biological, tangible and intangible cultural heritage<\/strong> of the territory. This work included extensive field campaigns, the detailed characterization of more than one hundred potential geosites<\/strong>, the identification of key ecosystems and species \u2014including endemic fauna and flora\u2014, the registration of archaeological sites and historical cultural manifestations, and an analysis of threats and vulnerabilities of the territory.<\/p>

The study also incorporated a territorial governance proposal<\/strong>, aligned with the standards of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, and tools to guide future planning: thematic maps, zoning models, conservation criteria, geotourism guidelines and a conceptual framework for the sustainable development of the geopark.<\/p>

The result is a robust scientific, technical and methodological basis<\/strong>, which today guides the management of the territory and constitutes one of the pillars for the formal nomination of San Clemente as UNESCO Global Geopark<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

In partnership with CONAF and thanks to funding from the Ministry of Science's Public Science program, we designed and built a Interactive museum room in Vilches<\/strong>, Located within the CONAF Environmental Information Center, this exhibition\u2014free and open to the public\u2014combines science, art and technology<\/strong> to explain climate change, natural hazards and the dynamics of the Maule Andes in an accessible and meaningful way.<\/p>

Since its opening, the room has received thousands of visitors<\/strong>, Among tourists, families, and school groups, it has become one of the most important educational landmarks in the municipality. To enhance its impact, we developed mediation sessions<\/strong> together with Geology students from the Catholic University of Maule, who guide different activities, talk with visitors and provide a scientific perspective.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

We have promoted and coordinated research in glaciology, volcanology, biodiversity (mainly focused on flora), archaeology and land management<\/strong>, working with regional and national universities. This work has allowed us to develop glacier mass balances<\/strong>, studies of endemic flora<\/strong>, Systematic monitoring of geosites, analysis of natural hazards, and various scientific outreach projects that bring knowledge closer to the community.<\/p>

Our main academic partner is the Catholic University of Maule (UCM)<\/strong>, an institution with which we maintain an ongoing collaboration. Thanks to this partnership, the geopark receives support from researchers, students in internships, thesis students and master's degree students<\/strong>, who develop high-level studies directly in the territory and contribute concretely to the understanding and enhancement of the Maule Andes.<\/p>

Pillanmapu has thus established itself as a natural laboratory<\/strong>, a living space where science is developed on the ground and at the service of heritage, sustainable management and local communities.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The Pillanmapu Geopark has established itself as a meeting place for institutions. Besides the public institutions that are part of the Geopark's daily management (Municipality of San Clemente and the Maule Regional Government), other participating and collaborating institutions include CONAF, Sernatur, Seremi MA, Seremi BBNN, and CRDP Maule.<\/p>

This collaborative governance is at the heart of the geopark model and allows progress towards sustainable, coherent and long-term territorial management.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Collaboration with private institutions is fundamental to the development of the Pillanmapu Geopark. We work with foundations, tour operators, accommodations, local businesses and committed companies<\/strong> with conservation, education, and sustainable tourism in the Maule mountain range. These partnerships provide technical capabilities, on-the-ground experience, essential services for visitors, and a direct connection with the communities in the region.<\/p>

\u2013 Develop modern interpretive infrastructure that is consistent with the landscape.
\u2013 Strengthen the training of local guides and entrepreneurs.
\u2013 Protect the most fragile geosites and ecosystems.
\u2013 Strengthen our educational programs for schools, high schools and visitors.
\u2013 To position the territory at a national and international level.<\/p>

Pillanmapu is a long-term project.
